Thought for the weekend

Could one of the “purposes” of love be to make couples crazy enough to ditch their current partners first? The overwhelming evidence from our genes and from the history of human societies is that something is driving breakups just as powerfully as that same mechanism, or some related one, drives people to get together in the first place.

Thought for the weekend

It’s time that we start describing the world as “fat” or “lean.” “Lean” societies approach consumption and production with scarcity in mind. And what makes an economy “fat”? Plenty is normal. Fat economies must stop assuming that poor countries should mimic them and instead embrace their models for social innovation and efficiency.

Thought for the weekend

There is nature vs. nurture debate brewing when it comes it investing.

Seth Klarman, renowned value investor and president of the Boston-based Baupost Group, which manages $26 billion in hedge-fund assets, has this to say:

most people might possess “a dominant gene” for chasing hot performance and overhyped assets, while only a minority have “the recessive value gene” that confers a patient preference for whatever is battered and unpopular.

Many investors may in fact have a genetic predisposition to hunt for bargains in the stock market—although the environment you grew up in also powerfully shapes the kind of investor you become.

Thought for the weekend

Brief diagnostic interviews, lasting only five minutes each, were held with a series of patients at the time of their admission to hospital and then presented to groups of experienced psychiatrists who were required to make a diagnosis. The content of the interview was presented in three alternative ways — as a videotape, as an audiotape, or as a written transcript. It turned out that an accurate diagnosis could be made within the first few minutes of an interview and behavioural cues seem to be of little or no importance in this regard, irrespective of the medium (transcript, audio, etc…) i.e. less is more.
